Harris R.I.P.Robert Harris, occupation miner, came to Western Australia with a complement of 27 Royal Sappers & Miners (in 1856 merged with the Royal Engineers) and three RE officers.  These men, who came on the ship Nile as Instructing Warders to the convicts, arrived on 1st January 1858 .

Robert Harris’ name is on the Muster Roll and Pay List for January 1858 [WO11-158] which shows his total pay for that month as £2 0s. 0½d. Before the end of the year Robert Harris died in Western Australia. According to his Western Australian Death Registration (No. 1189), he was 28 years old.

This is the sum total of knowledge about this man.  His date of enlistment in the Army, his service number, his date and place of birth and marital status are all unknowns; and so is his place of burial.  If any new information comes to light, it will be posted here.  Meanwhile, Private Harris, rest in peace.
